Read to Self

Our literacy stations are based on the Daily 5 structures. The first center we learn about is read to self. This is where students work to build stamina in their independent reading. Students are taught that a book can be read three ways:
1. Read the pictures (look at the pictures a tell your own story in your mind)
2. Read the words (this will come later)
3. Retell a story (students show their comprehension or understanding of a book or story when they are able to tell it themselves)
The goal is for students to be independent in this center, and learn that good readers engage in reading for a period of time.
